Jonathan Meese
(b. 1970, Tokyo) has had over 50 solo shows in the last 10 years. in 2007- 8:
Watermill Center, Southampton; Bortolami, NY; CaixaForum Barcelona; Contemporary
Fine Arts, Berlin; Galerie Mirchandi + Steinruecke, Mumbai; Galerie Krinzinger,
Vienna; Daniel Templon, Paris ; Essl Museum, Vienna; Louisiana Museum, Copenhagen;
and more. Jonathan is above all a performance artist like none other, whose paintings,
drawings, stage sets, utterances are all one – an equisite and utterly
original human being where art rules – art has ultimate transformative
power. Despite the seeming histrionics his is a generous and profoundly humble
understanding of humanity and as it happens the objects of his practice – sculpture,
paintings and drawings – are among our finest art of our time. His 22’ wide painting at HVCCA’s XXL – Recent Large Scale Paintings (2007-8) was center stage and for all its mastery, it was Meese’s performance that stole the show.
