Hermann Nitsch
(b. 1938, Vienna) is arguably the best known living Austrian artist who has challenged
and influenced the art world with his performances and exhibitions that has sometimes
resulted in imprisonment. Hermann has had hundreds of solo and group museum shows
and as of this month has two museums dedicated to his work, one in Austria and
one in Naples. In the past year he has had solo exhibits at Columbia University,
NY, in Bologna, Verona, Mistelbach, Naples, Berlin, and Beijing. He is represented
by Mike Weiss Gallery, NYC. He was included at HVCCA in 2006-7, in REVERENCE with a landmark “blood” painting from 1962. His paintings, drawings
and photos, such as the two made specifically for this auction, are always challenging.
For him every aspect of living is part of his art – he demystifies the
humanness by addressing its core instincts and values. His work is owned by almost
every major museum in the world.
