THE BANNER PROJECT

"A city with public art is a city that thinks, feels and grows."

The Banner Project brings together eight professional artists to mentor over 300 young artists to create a large-scale community engaged art installation inspired by the show "Circa 1986", at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art.

These colorful banners will be installed on the side of the James Street parking garage in downtown Peekskill for a year, after which they will return to their home base in the communities that created them.

Participants of The Banner Project range from college art students, to youth from the Salvation Army, to regional Middle and High School students and include young artists from Peekskill, Greenburgh, North Castle, Yonkers, Rye, and the Croton-Cortlandt area.

This Banner Project is led by local artist Kelli Bickman, who is the founder of the Youth Mural Arts Program, a grassroots community engaged arts campaign developed based on the need for more publicly accessible art in Peekskill. ArtsWestchester awarded the Youth Mural Arts program an ArtsAlive grant to kick off the 'Banner Project' beginning in Spring 2011.

"Community art stimulates the economy, promotes conversation, uplifts spirits and will help our city and region grow in a positive way," says Bickman. "The artists and the participating youth develop a sense of civic pride by creating something beautiful to share in the public domain. Thousands of people will be positively affected by this project."
