Global Big Latch On
HVCCA is partnering with NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital to host the Global Big Latch On!
This collaboration was inspired by the artwork of Asya Reznikov, “Expression” and “Wet Bar,” currently on display as part of “Between I & Thou.” Reznikov’s artwork features the theme of lactation, both in her photographic rendition of Manet’s “A Bar at the Folies-Bergère,” where she is depicted wearing her hands-free pump, and her video, “Expression,” where she hand-expresses breastmilk into crystal goblets. “Expression” also features a fantastic hand-made resin frame with a variety of galactagogues (plants that promote lactation). Artist Asya Reznikov will be in attendance for this event to mingle with the mothers and talk about her work casually.
What it is:
For the Global Big Latch on event, HVCCA is opening its doors to women to gather to breastfeed and offer support to each other. Our doors will open at 9:30 am, and the latch on begins officially at 10:30 am sharp. Official counters will tally the number of women and babies latched at the same time, and the totals will be reported to be included in the global count. Last year, 17,852 women latched 17,992 babies at the same time at over 758 locations in 28 countries! HVCCA is proud to offer a unique setting for this incredible event, engaging the women and children in attendance with contemporary art. Siblings are welcome, as we will have storytelling and coloring available for young children to partake in while their mothers get settled. HVCCA and NewYork-Presbyterian Hudson Valley Hospital are also holding a free raffle with several great prizes for attendees! Babywearing International of Rockland-Westchester will also be in the house, so don your favorite baby and tell them who you’re wearing!
Parking is available on-site in the HVCCA parking lot, as well as on both sides of Park and Grant streets for the day. Parking in Beverage World’s lot is prohibited. Limited stroller parking will be available within HVCCA, so we do recommend babywearing if possible. HVCCA’s doors will open at 9:30 am, allowing time for mothers and children to enter, sign in, and explore the space a bit. At 10:15 we will ask that mothers begin to take their place for the Latch On, which will begin promptly at 10:30 am. The Latch On count takes about 5 to 10 minutes maximum, though mothers are welcome to continue nursing their babies until finished.
About the Global Big Latch On:
Global Big Latch On events are highly successful, targeted community development initiatives that raise awareness of breastfeeding, encourage the formation of support networks between breastfeeding persons, and aim to normalize breastfeeding as a part of daily life. Global Big Latch On events take place at registered locations around the world, where women gather together to breastfeed and offer peer support to each other. Their friends, family and community join this celebration to promote and support breastfeeding. Volunteers from within the community host each location, hosting a Global Big Latch On event creates a lasting support network for the community. The Global Big Latch On takes place annually over two days during World Breastfeeding Week (1st – 7th August). As a worldwide peer support and community development event, it aims to strengthen national and global support for breastfeeding and to improve the health of children and women around the world.
Global Big Latch On events aim to protect, promote & support breastfeeding families by:
– Provide support for communities to identify and grow opportunities to provide on-going breastfeeding support and promotion in local communities.
– Raise awareness of breastfeeding support and knowledge available locally and globally.
– Help communities positively support breastfeeding in public places.
– Make breastfeeding as normal part of day-to-day life at a local community level.
– Increase support for women who breastfeed – women are supported by their partners, family and their communities.
– Ensure communities have the resources to advocate for coordinated appropriate and accessible breastfeeding support services.
