Taking Up Space: The Social Capital of Public Art, the Aftermath and The Curator As Mediator
Join us for talk #3 in the Taking Up Space series:
The Social Capital of Public Art, the Aftermath and The Curator As Mediator
What does it mean to create a meaningful art experience? What role is played by the relationship between text and art objects? How do these experiences contribute to social and cultural progress?
Talk Nr. 3 of Peekskill Project 6’s Taking Up Space series focuses on the aftermath, taking the opportunity to think about what happens when contemporary artistic practice does not benefit its intended public, but rather serves as a tool for ends other than those intended by the artist. Reflecting on these cases is fundamental to advance artistic practices that don’t take context for granted, and evaluate past experiences to improve future ones. Together, participating panelists will consider the responsibility of and critical role played by curatorial practice in bridging the gap between art production and public understanding. Through text, translation and storytelling, curators often have the capacity to build and reveal the mythologies behind the process of making work, as well as create new life for work through critical discourse that maintains the value and importance of artwork over time.
By exploring this fundamental closeness between curator and artist, throughout the creation process, Talk Nr.3 demonstrates how the current generation of curators is deeply exploring its role as mediator between art and life. In doing so, they are able to weave together the perceived and proposed realities between common people and artists, enriching this intersection through new language that reveals the intricacies of these shared worlds.
