“The Challenge of Working with Artists Using Environmental Materials", with special reference to Mendieta.

Presenter:
Mary Sabbatino, Vice-President: Galerie Lelong, New York

Sunday May 3, 2009, 4:00-6:00 PM

There are some gallery leaders whose passion translates to their support of artists whose appreciation is beyond the borders of commercialism. Mary Sabbatino is one such a gallerist, sensitive and committed to the support of artists whose work is ‘un-possessible’. She is an extraordinary lecturer and advocate for artists such as Andy Goldsworthy, Ana Mendieta, Jaume Plensa and Alfredo Jaar. Ana holds a special place in this grouping, having been a pioneer in feminist and ritualistic art, and having died tragically at an early age. Aside from lecturing about Ana and her work, Ms Sabbatino, along with Raquelin Mendieta, Donald Kuspit and Gloria Moure, is one of the authors of the seminal work Ana Mendieta.

The gallery has represented Mendieta exclusively since 1991 and has cooperated with the preparation of three retrospectives, most recently at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.

Ana Mendieta’s Volcan Series # 2, 1979 and Burial Pyramid, Yagul Mexico, 1974, along with a suite of 6 photographs, are on display in the current HVCCA exhibition ‘Origins’ (Courtesy the estate of Ana Mendieta and Galerie Lelong)
